Hey friends! I was messing around with Haikus the other evening, and wrote a little series of adventure poems about our travel experience. I love Haikus- the weird lil’ stanzas of five, seven and five syllables- and they really suit the individual moments that make up a longer travel experience, and give a tiny insight into palavers and feelings that we’ve experienced.
Here ya go:
Adventure Poems: Our journey in Haikus
On mosquitoes
Mosquito bites me
What did I do to you though
Now I will squash you
On tuk tuks
Tuk tuk driver swerves
Six of us in one tuk tuk
Will we be dead soon
On bugs
Something slithers up
Snake spider or cockroach?
Phew just a gecko
On the beach
For goodness sake kids
Can you put on your shoes please
I told you sand’s hot
On tanning
Thought was bronzing
Now I’m like a candy cane
No it’s not funny
On vegan food
Curried rice again
Or maybe rice and curry
Vegan choices here
On jellyfish stings
Watch out! Jellyfish!
Quick swim this way quickly Mum
I swam into it
On children we have met
Illuminating
Dearly made and loved
Precious diamonds in the rough
On flights with kids
What fresh hell is this
Thirteen hours in a tin can
Need eject button
On airport food
An apple- is it gold?
No so why is it two pounds
For this shrivelled thing
On co sleeping
The thing is my loves
I love you a ton always
But I love space, too
On visa rules
Do you really think
I’ll set up house with my kids
And never leave here?
On babies passports
Babies look the same
So it could be any kid
This is pretty dumb
On laundry
Can I please just get
My clothes washed dried and returned
Without the iron holes
On the Thai airways check in staff we dealt with on Christmas Eve
Those evil robots
Immune to all emotion
Thanks for nothing guys
On missing people
Little bits of heart
Travelling around with us
Can’t wait to see you
On translation issues in Thailand
Miming a period
Not a highlight of my life
Got tampons though, win.
On fussing over the kids
What would happen, hmm?
If I grabbed their cheeks tightly
How do you like it?
On sand
Is there anything
More annoying and grainy
Than this golden curse
On selling everything
Blessing or burden
Things and ‘stuff’ can weigh you down
Miss hair straighteners though
On starting yoga
Do I look well cool?
This does not feel natural
Look like drunk pretzel
On the adventure
Have any regrets?
Absolutely not, it’s fab
You only live once
