Stunning Vegan Subscription Box: The Vegan Larder Deluxe Box Full Review
I recently had the opportunity to experience something I’ve wanted to try for a while- a UK vegan subscription box! I’ve always fancied trying out a few different types of subscription boxes (food, activities, beauty etc) to add a little sparkle to my postal deliveries, but I could never decide which to go for. That is until uOpen, the UK’s leading marketplace for subscription boxes, got in touch and asked if I wanted to review their service.
Guess what the answer was?
I was only too happy to browse through the uOpen website– there are countless subscription boxes in every category you can think of, from gardening to chocolate and hot sauce to books! I love the idea of gifting a subscription box to someone on a special occasion as it is literally the gift that keeps on giving- or simply treating yourself with a lovely surprise through the door every so often!
The first box that came to my door was a Deluxe Vegan Larder box from the small, friendly company The Vegan Larder. Run by two lovely ladies Vanessa and Louise-Claire, the Vegan Larder offers vegan gift boxes and vegan subscription boxes for when you just don’t know what to buy, or just fancy a treat! There is a vegan picnic box, a vegan cooking starter box, a vegan chocolate box… all packed full of delicious, ethical vegan goodies.
So, what’s more exciting than getting a parcel addressed to yourself? Well, I’ll tell you: it’s getting a parcel addressed to yourself that you know is a delicious vegan tuck box packed full of vegan snacks, new and delectable ingredients for vegan recipes, and of course mouth-watering vegan treats. My box was coming palm oil free and packed with goodies from little-known and independent suppliers.
Imagine my excitement when the doorbell rang and our postman handed me a weighty cardboard box with ‘Vegan Larder’ printed on the front. Oh yeah. Two minutes later I’d torn into the box and was revelling over the contents. I had no idea what to expect and I was a little nervous that it was going to be all ingredients for cooking complicated shizzle, but I should have had more faith. Inside my beautiful Deluxe Vegan Larder box was nestled:
* A huge bag of gluten-free cookie mix from Superfood Bakery
* A bottle of smokey sriracha fermented bio-live hot sauce from Eaten Alive
* A bag of savoury Bombay Mix from Cofresh
* Two bars of fruit snack from Freya’s Snacks
* A jar of Dukkah spice mix from Steenbergs
* A make-your-own chocolate spread kit from Choconette
* A jar of Gingerbread satay marinade/dip from GingerBeard’s Preserves
* A large packet of ready-to-eat gourmet french lentils from Merchant Gourmet
That’s a lot more than I had expected and I was really pleased to see a great combination of snacks, quick-prepare products and ingredients for ‘proper’ recipes- especially as I’d never heard of Dukkah or fermented hot sauce! It was obvious at first glance that there was significantly more value than the £24.99 price (I worked it out later and the RRP would be around £30), plus several of the brands were ones I’d never heard of, so the vegan subscription box is a great way to discover new brands and products as well as save money. The products in glass jars were carefully wrapped and they were arranged neatly inside the box.
My children were very excited to get stuck in to the goodies, and the first to be demolished were the Freya fruit snack bars. I’ve never had anything like them, they are super fruity and sweet but all natural and just 37kcal for a whole bar- perfect as a workout snack!
Then it was lunchtime, during which we tried the Bombay Mix, Dukkah spice mix and the hot sauce from Eaten Alive.
I’ve always loved Bombay Mix, I ended up eating it with a spoon it was so good and I also really like that it’s so easy to keep in a kitchen cupboard as a quick snack or nibbles before dinner.
The Dukkah spice mix was a revelation- I dipped some flatbread and olive oil into the jar and it was just gorgeous, perfect as an accompaniment to a Middle Eastern or Mediterranean meal, and a small amount packs a serious flavour punch so the jar will last us a good while. I also really liked that it came in a hand-labelled recyclable glass jar.
And oh, the hot sauce. I don’t think I’ve ever come across a condiment that I’ve actually wanted to carry around with me, but the Smokey Sriracha hot sauce is it. The sweet, smokey, spicy goodness goes with everything from corn on the cob to use as a extra something in a chilli or stew, and I’ve grabbed it down from the shelf at least twice a day since opening it!
Over the next few days we tried the rest of the products- the Merchant Gourmet lentils were beautiful as the hearty base to a casserole, and so convenient as they can just pop straight into the microwave. I’ll definitely be picking up more of their range- they even make champagne lentils, ooh!
The Gingerbeard’s gingerbread satay sauce was probably the product I underestimated most in the box- when I added a spoonful to a stir-fry it took the flavour to the next level in a way I really didn’t expect! This is another product that will last a good while, it will probably do for another five stir-fries!
The last products we tried were the Superfood Bakery cookie mix, which we topped with the Choconette make-your-own chocolate spread. This combination was an absolute winner; the cookies were so easy to bake and the kids had a great time messing up the kitchen while making them! A good dollop of the rich dark chocolate spread was the perfect topping, and the whole batch lasted less than two days (can you blame us?)
All in all I was seriously impressed with The Vegan Larder’s Deluxe vegan subscription box that I received from uOpen. The speed of delivery and the packaging was excellent, there was no extra plastic wrapping yet everything was arranged to arrive in perfect condition. I would recommend every product in the box, there was not one that I thought ‘I wish that wasn’t in there’ and to be honest I was expecting at least one that I wouldn’t like- the Vegan Larder went above and beyond! It’s obvious that Vanessa and Louise-Claire have put a lot of thought and effort into selecting really high quality and independent brands, and for the first time in ages I found myself actually thinking outside the box with ingredients and getting creative.
I would highly recommend checking out the Vegan Larder Deluxe Subscription box, as a gift to yourself or a friend- you absolutely do not have to be veggie or vegan to enjoy the contents, the products are delicious and I am sure would be relished by anyone into their food! I also urge you to check out the rest of the subscription boxes from uOpen, there really is something for everyone and they are fantastic value.
